Vladimir Muzny on his new book “SQL Server 2019 Administrator’s Guide”.

Vladimir Muzny is the author of the books SQL Server 2019 Administrator’s Guide, Hands-On Data Science with SQL Server 2017 and SQL Server 2017 Administrator’s Guide. We got the chance to sit down with him and find out more about his experience of writing with Packt.

Q: How long did it take you to write the book?

Vladimir: We worked with Marek and Packt team roughly a half of year.

Q: What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning the book?

Vladimir: It is very hard question. I met SQL Server when version 6.5 was up to date. For younger readers it might sound like black and white TV times. That’s why I cannot estimate the effort of research. My research resources are sometimes from official documentation, sometimes from Microsoft and partner events like PASS Summit and also from my own practice.

Q: Did you face any challenges during the writing process? How did you overcome them?

Vladimir: A million of challenges, however (laughing now)! At least it is very different to think “sql-ish” and explain the same way of thinking to readers understandable way. But there’s many small technical challenges like writing pieces of code which are repeatable on many unknown environments and so on.

Q: What advice would you give to readers learning tech? Do you have any top tips?

Vladimir: I have two advice’s: Start learning. Never stop learning.

Q. How do you keep up-to-date on your tech?

Vladimir: Since I started learning, I never stopped learning.

Q. Do you have a blog that readers can follow?

Vladimir: Not now, but I have my GitHub repository (github.com/dropmancz) where I publish demos and scripts from my lectures and sessions.

Q. Can you share any blogs, websites and forums to help readers gain a holistic view of the tech they are learning?

Vladimir: There’s bunch of resources, but for SQL Server we have very rich docs.microsoft.com. As a community website, I like sqlservercentral.com. But readers can google for SQL team blog and many others.
