Roman Storchak is the author of Azure Data Factory Cookbook, we got the chance to sit down with him and find out more about his experience of writing with Packt.

Q: What is/are your specialist tech area(s)?

Roman: My main interest is in building cultures that support data driven decision making. I am an expert in Data Warehouse, BI and Data Science Practice.

Q: What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning the book?

Roman: I was involved if a few project which used Azure and Azure Data Factory. In my opinion it is an excellent tool to bootstrap salable ETL/ELT pipelines.

Q: Did you face any challenges during the writing process? How did you overcome them?

Roman: Creating practical but comprehensible recipes was the biggest challenge for me. I believe, that we have to solve real-life problems. Some of the chapters require understanding of wider range of technologies like Active Directory, Databricks and Apache Spark, etc.

Q: What’s your take on the technologies discussed in the book? Where do you see these technologies heading in the future?

Roman: I believe, that Azure Data Factory is a handy tool, that is used to build ETL/ELT pipelines. Building a production grade pipeline that can scale to terabytes of data in a matter of minutes already looks like magic. Advances in the products like ADF erase the border between small and big data.

Q. Why should readers choose this book over others already on the market? How would you differentiate your book from its competition?

Roman: This books contains a set of practical recipes that cover Azure Data Factory and a set of technologies from Azure Data Platform.

Q. What are the key takeaways you want readers to come away from the book with?

Roman: Big data becomes easier to handle. Leveraging technologies like Azure Data Factory helps enterprises achieve their business goals faster.

Q. What advice would you give to readers learning tech? Do you have any top tips?

Roman: Practice as much as possible. Master a set of tools and get a deep understanding of how they work.

Q. How did you organize, plan, and prioritize your work and write the book?

Roman: It was a challenging adventure. First, I have played with a particular set of technologies, experimenting and trying to build a recipe without particular limitations. After that, I used to rebuild it from scratch and test all possible scenarios and settings. And, on the third writing, I was writing down the steps to fill the recipe.

Q. What is that one writing tip that you found most crucial and would like to share with aspiring authors?

Roman: Start as early as possible. Life often surprises you when the project is close to deadline.
