Interview with Viktor Hedberg

Viktor Hedberg is the author of Mastering Microsoft 365 Defender we got the chance to sit down with him and find out more about his experience of writing with Packt.

Q: How did you become an author for Packt? Tell us about your journey. What was your motivation for writing this book?

Viktor: This is the second time I’m authoring a book for Packt, much like last time, the other author reached out and wanted to know if I was interested in co-authoring the piece with him.

Q: What is the name of your book?

Viktor: Mastering Microsoft 365 Defender.

Q: What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning the book?

Viktor: Nothing, the features in this books are something that I work with on a daily basis and have been deploying for 50+ customers during the last 2.5 years.

Q: What key takeaways do you want readers to come away with from the book?

Viktor: How to configure Microsoft 365 Defender, and how the features work together to help you detect and respond to threats.

Q: Can you share any blogs, websites and forums to help readers gain a holistic view of the tech they are learning?

Viktor: There are almost too many to list. But most of them are mentioned in the book :).

Q. Did you face any challenges during the writing process? How did you overcome them?

Viktor: The main challenge was trying to find the balance between family, work, and authoring.

Q. How would you describe your author journey with Packt? Would you recommend Packt to aspiring authors?

Viktor: There are some communication difficulties at times, but that is mainly because almost all correspondence is kept via email, which of course adds some lead time for replies at times.

Q. Why should readers choose this book over others already on the market? How would you differentiate your book from its competition?

Viktor: This book goes wide into all aspects of Microsoft 365 Defender, giving readers a wheel rounded knowledge of them all.

Q. What is/are your specialist tech area(s)?

Viktor: Cyber Security, Incident Response, Blue Teaming, Purple Teaming, IAM.

Q. What advice would you give to readers jumping into this technology? Do you have any top tips?

Viktor: Always try to stay ahead of the curve. Things are evolving really fast, so keep up with the latest news.

Q. What’s your take on the technologies discussed in the book? Where do you see these technologies heading in the future?

Viktor: I think and hope that Microsoft will continue to improve on these technologies and help customers staying even more safe.

Q. How did you organize, plan, and prioritize your work and write the book?

Viktor: It differed from day to day, but mostly it was long nights after the kids went to bed.

Q. What are your favorite tech journals? How do you keep yourself up to date on tech?

Viktor: Honestly, mostly from social media such as X, but journals is probably bleepingcomputer.com

Q: What is that one writing tip that you found most crucial and would like to share with aspiring authors?
