Shyam Varan Nath is the author of Mastering 5G Network Design, Implementation, and Operations we got the chance to sit down with him and find out more about his experience of writing with Packt.
Q: How did you become an author for Packt? Tell us about your journey. What was your motivation for writing this book?
Shyam: This is my 4th book with Packt as the publisher, on Emerging Technology topics. I like to share my knowledge acquired by working in the industry, via Thought Leadership and Techno-Functional books.
Q: What is the name of your book?
Shyam: Mastering 5G Network Design, Implementation, and Operations.
Q: What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning the book?
Shyam: Before starting a book, I look at the industry trends and the potential impact of the technology under consideration. I discuss it with other industry experts, about the topic.
Q: What key takeaways do you want readers to come away with from the book?
Shyam: The key takeaways around 5G include:
a) The history and evolution of 5G
b) The different components of 5G networks
c) The different deployment scenarios for 5G networks
d) The different 5G use cases
e) The security considerations for 5G networks
f) The management and optimization of 5G networks
Q: Can you share any blogs, websites and forums to help readers gain a holistic view of the tech they are learning?
Shyam: I would encourage readers to attend industry events like IoTSWC and Mobile World Congress to get a pulse of the industry around mobility and its applications for IoT. Also suggest visiting https://www.3gpp.org often.
Q. Did you face any challenges during the writing process? How did you overcome them?
Shyam: Technologies like Mobility and 5G are changing fast. It is a challenge to include content that does not get obsolete quickly. I try to avoid that by focusing on the application aspects of technology and the business outcomes that it can drive for the Enterprises.
Q. How would you describe your author journey with Packt? Would you recommend Packt to aspiring authors?
Shyam: This is my 4th book with Packt since 2017 and it is always a pleasure to work with the editorial staff and other co-authors who are from different parts of the world.
Q. Why should readers choose this book over others already on the market? How would you differentiate your book from its competition?
Shyam: The breadth of knowledge around 5G network design and its application is un-parallel. The authors of this book are willing to interact with the readers and engage in discussions to further help them.
Q. What is/are your specialist tech area(s)?
Shyam: My expertise lies in the fields of 5G, AI, IoT and Digital Twins.
Q. What advice would you give to readers jumping into this technology? Do you have any top tips?
Shyam: Like any emerging technology, it is important to understand the potential and limitations of the technology before large scale investments in it. This book provides a breadth of analysis on the 5G related topics, to guide the readers on how to apply it to their own business domain.
Q. What’s your take on the technologies discussed in the book? Where do you see these technologies heading in the future?
Shyam: 5G will have a profound impact on the Enterprises and enable them to improve their operations to provide better services to their stakeholders and customers. This will be possible due to superior performance, higher bandwidth and lower latency, thus unleashing novel use cases.
Q. How did you organize, plan, and prioritize your work and write the book?
Shyam: The best way to write a book is to capture your industry experiences. I often participate in large technology and business events either in person or virtually to stay current.
Q. What are your favorite tech journals? How do you keep yourself up to date on tech?
Shyam: IIC Journal of Innovation is one of my favorites.

Q: What is that one writing tip that you found most crucial and would like to share with aspiring authors?
Shyam: For all my books, I have worked with co-authors. Working with a “team” of authors helps the book to capture a breadth of knowledge and real world experiences. It also divides the writing work and allows the book to be published on time.
