Interview with Russ McKendrick

Russ McKendrick is the author of Mastering Docker – Fourth Edition, we got the chance to sit down with him and find out more about his experience of writing with Packt.

Q: How did you become an author for Packt? Tell us about your journey…

Russ: I started off as a reviewer and was then asked to contribute a title.

Q: How long did it take you to write the book?

Russ: About 5 months

Q: What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning the book?

Russ: Around a month, most of that time was reviewing the third edition and identify where the technology had moved on and other changes

Q: Did you face any challenges during the writing process? How did you overcome them?

Russ: The technologies i have covered are always improving so during writing it was important to review and make that nothing which was being covered is going to be redundant in the next 12 months which meant reviewing the content from the previous version and reviewing the various software roadmaps and plans.

Q: What advice would you give to readers learning tech? Do you have any top tips?

Russ: Find real world examples which are relevant to what you know and try and keep ahead of the curve – there is nothing worse than having to learn a new technology on a deadline.

Q. How do you keep up-to-date on your tech?

Russ: Subscribe to news letters and use a tool which allows you to bookmark anything interesting you find during the day from news sites, social media and your general day-to-day browsing
