Interview with Robert Loredo

Robert Loredo is the author of Learn Quantum Computing with Python and IBM Quantum Experience, we got the chance to sit down with him and find out more about his experience of writing with Packt

Q: How did you become an author for Packt? Tell us about your journey.

Robert: Was reached out by a Packt recruiter via LinkedIn. Had always thought about wanting to write a book, so I figured no better time than the present.

Q: How long did it take you to write the book?

Robert: Just over a year, would have been less but as with most software/code books, things change over time, so had spent most of the time updating. Great experience nonetheless.

Q: What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning the book?

Robert: Learned everything by the many mentors, educators, and of course the mighty Qiskit Community.

Q: Did you face any challenges during the writing process? How did you overcome them?

Robert: Generally finding time to sit and work at it. With all the challenges that occurred during 2020, I just tried to focus on one chapter at a time.

Q: What advice would you give to readers learning tech? Do you have any top tips?

RobertThe best tip I ever received was from a tutor in college who helped me learn how to learn by doing two things. 1. Break down any problem into smaller chunks and 2. To learn something new, try to associate with something you know very well and then explain it to someone who doesn’t know the topic and see if you can properly teach it. Learning by teaching.

Q. How do you keep up-to-date on your tech?

Robert: Generally just always reading the latest research topics in the area, looking for interesting topics, and trying new things out all the time. Think out of the box is generally a good way to innovate.

Q. Do you have a blog that readers can follow?

Robert: Not yet, I have a Medium account, but have been too busy with this book to dedicate writing things down. Since I am now finished and have gone back to complete my Ph.D., I might go write on experiences and any new things I learn on the way.

Q. Can you share any blogs, websites and forums to help readers gain a holistic view of the tech they are learning?

Robert: For quantum computing, I would definitely keep up to speed on the quantum communities that are out there. Qiskit Slack channel is a great one as it has many channels worldwide with researchers from both industry and academia. Another great source is journals and arxiv, where you can see the latest in research.

Q. How would you describe your author journey with Packt? Would you recommend Packt to aspiring authors?

Robert: Great group, very helpful and motivating. If I were to write another book, I would most definitely work with the Packt team. If anything they are very patient. 🙂
