Marius Sandbu is the author of Windows Ransomware Detection and Protection we got the chance to sit down with him and find out more about his experience of writing with Packt.
Q: What are your specialist tech areas?
Marius: Cloud, Security, DevOps, EUC, Public Cloud, Cloud-native ecosystem.
Q: How did you become an author for Packt? Tell us about your journey. What was your motivation for writing this book?
Marius: I’ve previously been an author for Packt, and this is my fifth book and I always felt that I had support and help during the entire process.
Q: What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning the book?
Marius: Much of the research for this book happened during actual incidents where I worked with real customers to help them with ransomware attacks and trying to get systems up and running again or helping them implementing countermeasures. Still I spent at least 6 months on navigating trough the ecosystem.
Q: Did you face any challenges during the writing process? How did you overcome them?
Motivation, which is not always present or other things happening in your private life. Sometimes you just need to take a mental break before continuing. Because there is no better feeling holding the actual physical copy of your own book.
Q: What’s your take on the technologies discussed in the book? Where do you see these technologies heading in the future?
Marius: I see that security is going trough a big change, since it previously used to be something that was handled only by the IT department but now has shifted focus and is now more responsibility of the entire company.
Q: Why should readers choose this book over others already on the market? How would you differentiate your book from its competition?
Marius: I like to think that my book has a bit more hands-on approach, and covers the entire aspect and attack vectors, and much more focus on actual countermeasures. While the competition is bit more focused on risk assessments or doing forensics.
Q: What are the key takeaways you want readers to come away with from the book?
Marius: I want to give them a solid understanding on how ransomware actually works and give them insight into what countermeasures that work.
Q. What advice would you give to readers jumping into this technology? Do you have any top tips?
Marius: Try and learn something each day, and try to teach away something every day. Since working with technology is working with constant change and having a mindset that always you to easily adopt new changes is important.
