Karen Tovmasyan is the author of Mastering AWS CloudFormation, we got the chance to sit down with him and find out more about his experience of writing with Packt.
Q: How did you become an author for Packt? Tell us about your journey…
Karen: I got a message from Meeta Rajani, she offered me to write a book on CloudFormation. I was already going to write a blog series, but an idea of the whole book was way more interesting for me.
Q: How long did it take you to write the book?
Karen: It took as more than 6 months, from sending the first draft till the actual release.
Q: What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning the book?
Karen: I was already an expert of CloudFormation, so it didn’t require too much time. The challenge was writing on extended topics like CDK and SAM as I didn’t have a lot of experience with them.
Q: Did you face any challenges during the writing process? How did you overcome them?
Karen: The most challenging part for me was adopting my knowledge to the writing, which will be easy for my readers to understand.. Luckily I had a very experienced team of editors working with me.
Q: What advice would you give to readers learning tech? Do you have any top tips?
Karen: I can only suggest to keep practicing and continuously reviewing your code, refactoring it with best practices in mind. And practice, practice, practice…
Q. How do you keep up-to-date on your tech?
Karen: I am subscribed to the vendors’ newsletters and follow several aggregator channels in Telegram. I try out every new tool, tech or framework I find interesting to me.
Q. How would you describe you author journey with Packt? Would you recommend Packt to aspiring authors?
Karen: Packt’s crew is one of the most committed people I have ever worked with. It was a pleasure to collaborate with them and I encourage everyone who has a knowledge to share – just go and do it!
