Interview with Brett Hargreaves

Brett Hargreaves is the author of Microsoft Azure Architect Technologies – Exam Guide AZ303, we got the chance to sit down with him and find out more about his experience of writing with Packt.

Q: How did you become an author for Packt? Tell us about your journey…

Brett: I create online training courses and contacted Packt via your website to ask if you’d be interested in my writing a book on Azure certification. Originally it to write the AZ304 companion book to the AZ303 book – but when we realised the AZ300 book you already had needed updating I offered to update the AZ300 to AZ303.

Q: How long did it take you to write the book?

Brett: The AZ303 is an update to an book you already had, therefore this one only took about 3 months.

Q: What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning the book?

Brett: I spent about 6 months researching the AZ303 exam requirements whilst creating an online training course for the same title.

Q: Did you face any challenges during the writing process? How did you overcome them?

Brett: the timelines were quite tight. I was originally writing this title at the same time as AZ304 – however the AZ304 went on hold so I could concentrate on the AZ303 book.

Q: What advice would you give to readers learning tech? Do you have any top tips?

Brett: you have to get hands on experience – even if it’s just for yourself. think of an idea for something to create (e.g. a website or app) and have that in mind as you learning, building it out as you go.

Q. How do you keep up-to-date on your tech?

Brett: lots of reading! As my permanent job is as an Architect I often have to solve business problems using tech – therefore I am always learning the latest and newest things!

How would you describe you author journey with Packt? Would you recommend Packt to aspiring authors?

Brett: yes I would. I’ve written a book for a publishing house before, and I got a lot of help from the product manager who guided me.
