Interview of Jason Marston

Q: What is/are your specialist tech area(s)?

Jason : Cloud Solution Architecture, Microsoft 365 Security, Azure Security, Microsoft Security

Q: How did you become an author for Packt? Tell us about your journey. What was your motivation for writing this book?

Jason: I was originally contacted by Packt to write the Java content for Migrating Applications to the Cloud with Azure. After contributing to that I decided the book I really wanted to read did not exist so proposed this one to Packt.

Q: What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning the book?

Jason : I did not research specifically for this boom, as it documents the outcome of helping many clients migrate and modernized their applications from on premises to cloud native.

Q: Did you face any challenges during the writing process? How did you overcome them?

Jason: Towards the end of the first draft I was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer. To continue the project I handed over to two additional authors and provided them with support

Q: What’s your take on the technologies discussed in the book? Where do you see these technologies heading in the future?

Jason : Although this book is GCP focused I see a convergence of the services provided by all the major public clouds. We are already seeing this tendency but still have a way to go before a deployed application can simply be moved between public clouds without any outage.

Q: Why should readers choose this book over others already on the market? How would you differentiate your book from its competition?

Jason : Other books on the market cover the specific technologies well. They don’t however cover how to apply those technologies and actually migrate a real application.

Q. What are the key takeaways you want readers to come away from the book with?

Jason: Big bang is not the answer. The journey to the cloud for your application is just that, a journey. Your application will go through many iterations before it fully realises all the benefits of public cloud.

Q. What advice would you give to readers learning tech? Do you have any top tips?

Jason : Don’t just read about tech. Get hands on. Play with the technology and make mistakes.

Q. Do you have a blog that readers can follow?

Jason: I had a blog, but it is defunct due to the circumstances outlined above.

Q. How would you describe your author journey with Packt? Would you recommend Packt to aspiring authors?

Jason : I would and have recommended Packt to aspiring authors.

Q. How did you organize, plan, and prioritize your work and write the book?

Jason : I set aside specific times every day for working on the book. I also set those timeslots to be for specific activities. So Monday at 8pm for instance may be review first draft and refine. Saturday at 4pm may be add authorization guard to front end for withdrawals.

Q. What is that one writing tip that you found most crucial and would like to share with aspiring authors?

Jason: The only way to write is to write. Get organised and write a little every day. Trying to cram everything into a mammoth session on a weekend does not work.
